Summary
Published in Learning to Live Together: The Contribution of Education (UNESCO, 2013), this chapter discusses how VVOB strengthened teacher education institutions in Cambodia and Vietnam to promote innovative, student-centred teaching and learning. It analyses institutional capacity development using the European Centre for Development Policy Management’s “five core capabilities” framework and explores how teacher education systems can integrate participatory and inclusive pedagogies to support learning to live together.
The paper presents two national contexts: Cambodia, where support focused on adopting student-centred approaches in science and life skills teaching in primary and lower secondary education, and Vietnam, where the emphasis was on active teaching and learning methodologies and the integration of information and communication technology in secondary teacher education. Findings show that empowering teacher education institutions and strengthening collaboration across education levels contribute to sustainable improvement in teaching quality and social learning.
