Drawing on its work in Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and Latin-America, VVOB explores the potential synergies between gender transformative pedagogy and environmental education, whether their integration can strengthen teacher professional development and classroom practice. While gender transformative pedagogy and environmental education clearly share a vision for inclusive and sustainable futures, and address interconnected social issues, their intersections have received limited scholarly and practical attention.
Through the Belgian funded Teach2Empower programme, a global conceptual framework has been developed in 2025 to map the competencies required across multiple levels: learner outcomes (differentiated across education subsectors), learner–teacher interactions, teacher and school leader competencies, and aligned professional development strategies. The intersection of green and gender-transformative pedagogies highlights two central concepts—solidarity and alliance—as foundational for education to contribute to green and gender action.
The framework was developed through collaborative workshops with VVOB staff worldwide, a desk review of key literature on transformative and just education, and a gender analysis of over 200 teacher-led climate education projects from TeachersCOP 2025. It was then refined through expert online consultations.
