Classroom Library Project: Starter Kit Manual

Summary

The manual is a practical guide designed to help Foundation Phase teachers in South Africa establish and manage effective classroom libraries that build a lifelong habit of reading among learners. Based on a research initiative by the Wits School of Education and the Department of Basic Education, the manual provides step-by-step guidance on setting up, organising and maintaining classroom libraries, as well as encouraging independent and voluntary reading practices.

It explains the principles behind the Classroom Library approach — accessibility, learner autonomy and reading for enjoyment — and offers tools such as book management charts, reading cards and sticker systems for tracking progress. The manual includes detailed instructions for teachers on managing resources, engaging parents and training learners to care for books responsibly. A comprehensive list of isiZulu story titles and reading levels is also provided to support literacy in learners’ home language.
