Our Partners in Malawi

VVOB strengthens education through partnerships. We work within existing education systems, led by the Ministry of Education and its institutions. Depending on the country, we also collaborate with universities, teacher education institutions, civil society organisations, and more.

Our Approach to Partnerships

In Malawi, VVOB works hand in hand with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. We don’t build parallel systems; we strengthen what already exists. Together, we design professional development and education programmes that fit national structures, so teachers and school leaders have lasting support. Our approach is based on mutual learning, evidence that works in practice, and reforms that endure beyond any single project.

Government Partners

The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology is VVOB’s closest partner in Malawi. As the national authority on education, the Ministry ensures that reforms are sustainable and reach every learner.

Our primary focal point in the Ministry is the Directorate of Teacher Education and Development (DTED) supporting the professional development of teachers. We closely collaborate with other directorates such as the Directorate of Basic Education (DBE), the Directorate of Quality Assurance Services (DQAS), and others that connect education to wider national development priorities such as the Department of Planning, Education Management Information System (EMIS) units and Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) units. These partnerships ensure innovation is anchored within government structures.

Local Government

District Education Offices are also involved in our Malawian projects, ensuring the model is embedded in local systems and aligned with national priorities.

Collaborating Partners

Through the SCALE initiative, VVOB collaborates with Teaching at the Right Level Africa (TaRL Africa) and Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA), with support from the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Together with TaRL Africa, VVOB applies their proven Teaching at the Right Level methodology, built on assessing and grouping learners by ability rather than age or grade, to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy. IPA leads the independent impact evaluation and facilitates Test-Learn-Adapt cycles, generating evidence on learning outcomes, implementation quality, cost-effectiveness and scalability to inform decisions on national scale-up.
