The Ugandan Context
Uganda has one of the youngest populations in the world, and its fast growth puts education under pressure. Too many children complete the early years of primary school without being able to read, write or do basic maths, a gap that limits their chances later in life. To address this, VVOB and the Ministry of Education and Sports are embedding UCatchUp into the national system. Drawing on the proven Teaching at the Right Level approach, UCatchUp helps teachers identify what each learner already knows and support them to progress step by step.
Foundational skills are only the start. Agriculture remains the backbone of Uganda’s economy, but in schools it is still taught mainly in theory, leaving young people without the practical and entrepreneurial skills needed for modern, climate-smart farming or for building sustainable livelihoods. Through our Skilling for Sustainable Futures flagship, VVOB works with national institutions to connect these priorities, ensuring Uganda’s education system equips every learner with the skills to thrive and contribute to a more sustainable future.
